Quick Q & A with Yarn

Yarn has been playing together since 2007 and have released at least an album’s worth of music each year. They’re decided to go back to their roots and unplug a bit and see what happened: the result is their latest CD, Shine the Light On, which is being released on September 10. I was lucky enough to get a preview of the music and have to admit that it’s pretty tasty: it’s intimate, it’s full of great harmonies and instrumentation, and it will definitely delight Yarn’s avid fans, the Yarmy, as well as gain them new fans in the process. We’d love to hear about your recent experience recording, Shine the Light On. How would you describe the sound on this album as compared to recordings in your past catalog?: It feels more like our first two recordings, we wanted to revisit the completely acoustic format, so that’s what we did.
How did John Oates get involved with co-writing and playing on the CD?: We met at a show we both played in Nashville, then hung out again in NYC, it was then that we decided to get together back down in Nashville to do some writing.
Yarn has been playing for about six years. Has the band pretty much stayed the same or have you changed up some of the players to accommodate a different vision for the band?: It’s been completely consistent, other than the drummers, we’ve had three of those so far.
Some music critics categorize your music as being part of the jam band scene. Do you agree with that description? Is the “Yarmy” as passionate about your music as say the Dead Heads or other jam band devotees who travel around to see the band on tour.: It’s a great community to be a part of, and are honored to be a small part of it. We love our Yarmy and hope they love us back.
How rigorous is your touring schedule? Do you have any interesting or amusing stories about life on the road?: The schedule is constant, it’s definitely an alternative lifestyle. But we love it, and that’s why we do it.
