I’ll tell you a little secret. I love the me & thee. I bet you can already tell that if you’ve read any of my blog masterpieces to date. How cool is it that I get to hang around with some of the nicest people on the face of the earth and we all pitch in together to present some of the best concerts around? Okay, maybe I’m biased…but I happen to believe this is true.

I’ve been volunteering for nearly a decade now and every show is different. The acts change, the audiences change, and the mix of volunteers change…so the dynamics are constantly in flux. Tonight was a case of it being an interesting mix – hardcore fans from as far away as Nova Scotia (Hi Bill) and Florida (Hi Kelly) and one woman who lives right here in Marblehead whose son and mine were best buddies in kindergarten and coming to find out…she grew up in Meridian and used to go hear Steve play at the teen center there! (Hi Robbie) – and a funky performer named Steve Forbert who wrangled with the sound system and challenged our wonderful sound guy, Ron, for most of the night. It all worked out and the audience LOVED Steve….pure and simple. I may have said this in an earlier blog or in one of my press releases, but it’s clear—Steve Forbert shows are love fests from the first note to the last.
Prior to the show, Steve and I carried on a conversation about the Beatles and the Stones. He showed me a book he’s reading about the Fab Four: Meet the Beatles: A Cultural History of the Band That Shook Youth, Gender, and the World by Steven D Stark. His comment was that the book was “okay” and he was always searching for some unrevealed anecdotes to add to his knowledge about the Beatles. I told him that I was surprised that he was reading about the Beatles since I always consider him to be a Stones kind of guy. He said that while he finds Stones songs easy to play, he’s not able to do justice to Beatles songs because of the harmonics involved. Makes sense. Much to my surprise he dedicated “Honey Pie” to me and wanted to make sure that I was there to hear it. I was way in the back and he couldn’t see me until I stood up. ;-) Twas surely a night for this young at heart blogger to remember.
And what can I say about the Steve Forbert fans….what great folks! Seeing people leaving with big smiles on their faces surely makes all the hard work that is involved with producing these shows well worth it. Thanks to everyone for coming to the show!
