Teresa Ines Quintet

Brazilian Jazz & Bossa Nova

Me&Thee Music kicks off its winter season with the Teresa Ines Quintet and the warm sounds of Brazilian jazz and bossa nova on Friday, February 3 beginning at 8 pm. Ines has performed to sold out houses at the world-famous Zinc Bar in New York City, the Regattabar and Ryles in Cambridge as well as in concert halls across Europe, South America and Brazil. Musica Brasileira writes that her performances show “impeccable taste that create a rare beauty.”

Teresa Ines

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Teresa Ines has been performing since she was a teenager. Her musical passion led her to Berklee College of Music in Boston when she began touring as a sought-after singer, guitarist and flutist. She has released two CDs which feature new arrangements of Brazilian classics as well as original compositions. Ines, who now lives in Lynn, is also a well-known teacher who leads “music and movement” classes for children across the North Shore called Music Together.

Joining her will be pianist Nando Michelin, flutist Fernando Brandão, Ebinho Cardoso on bass, and South African percussionist Lumanyano Mzi.

Nando Michelin has recored 15 albums with many artists including Esperanza Spalding, George Garzone, Chico Pinheiro and Jerry Bergonzi. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Michelin has performed at the Smithsonian, Teatro Opera in Buenos Aires and Jordan Hall. He’s currently an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, Tufts University and Longy School of Music.

Fernando Brandão, who is also a professor at Berklee College of Music, is widely known in Brazil and the US as a bandleader, chamber musician and soloist using alto and bass flutes and pifanos. He leads his own ensembles, including the contemporary South American band Alma and the gafieira band Bohemia Carioca. He was a first prize winner in several national music competitions in Brazil and the Pappoutsakis Flute Competition in Boston.

Ebinho Cardoso is a virtuoso bassist, composer, arranger and music producer who has performed in numerous jazz clubs and festivals all over the US and Brazil. He has shared the stage with such jazz luminaries as Abraham Laboriel, Joe Hunt, Toninho Horta, Dave Samuels, Marshall Wood, and many others.

Lumanyano Mzi was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and has been drumming since the age of 6, when he snuck out of his house to join his father’s reggae band rehearsal. Lumanyano went on to study at the South African College of Music University of Cape Town and is currently studying for an advanced degree at Berklee. He has performed and tours with Judy Boucher in the UK, Luciano in Jamaica, Tontin David in France, among many others.
