The annual Fresh Voices show was one of those that will be remembered quite fondly by all who were in attendance. Not only were we able to celebrate the talents of two of our very own volunteers, Judy C and Dan Gonzalez, but we were thrilled to welcome 5 Day Weekend and Tripping Lily to our stage as well.

Judy C started the evening off with some of her beautiful original songs. Judy’s alternate tuning songs were a joy to hear. Obvious comparisons to the young Joni Mitchell are in order in that department for sure. Look for her forthcoming CD which she’s been working very hard and diligently on for many months.

Tripping Lily rocked the stage next. Their unique harmonies and arrangements are always a lot of fun and it’s not hard to understand why they’re a band that’s become a staple on WUMB. If you haven’t heard their CD, ”The Couch Sessions” yet, it’s highly recommended. Monica Rizzio’s pristine fiddle playing along with the very cool mandolin and guitar playing by Alex and Demetrius Becrelis, rounded out by the steady bass beat by Laird Boles is something to behold.

Dan Gonzalez’s set was mesmerizing. Dan’s lyrics are socially relevant musings on the current state of the world accompanied by stellar guitar playing. Dan is a finalist in not one but two songwriter contests this month in Massachusetts and Texas! And that’s not even counting the Honorable Mention he received for his song “Public Square” by wearelistening.org. He’s on a roll, for sure, and we’re thrilled to have had him on our stage so early in his career.

Five Day Weekend ended the evening with a rousing folk-rock set full of original tunes by talented and award-winning songwriter, Eric Colville. But this isn’t a one-man band — Jamie Gaull on guitar and Paula Gaull on percussion add wonderful harmonies and bring a real cohesiveness and fullness to the band. A highlight this evening was when Eric called Alex and Laird from Tripping Lily on stage to accompany them on one of his songs. The richness of the sound was inspiring and was a perfect way to end such a great night of music.
Thanks to all of you who performed and those of you who came to check out the Fresh Voices of 2007!
